Being named to an authoritative magazine or a research company’s “Best Of” or “Top 10” list brings an amazing amount of energy and marketing opportunities for the person, city, or company that makes such a list. Think Fortune’s 100 Best Companies to Work For, Crain’s New York Business Best Places to Work, and Working Mother Magazine’s Best Companies for Working Moms for example.
Then there’s Forbes’s Best Cities For Future Job Growth list that came out this week, which named six Florida cities within the top 10.
In our area, Naples came in the No. 1 spot with Cape Coral No. 3 and North Port at No. 10. Also, earlier this year Money Magazine named Cape Coral as a runner up in its Best Place to Retire – Waterfront Living category.
Best Of lists like this one bring a slew of opportunities for organizations like the Lee County Economic Development Office, which fired off an email a day after the Forbes list published, touting its Digital Ambassador program.
The number of businesses and individuals who can use these types of lists in their marketing mix number in the hundreds. Think about how you can use lists like the Forbes one to recruit employees from out of town, in case yours is an industry that has hard-to-fill jobs because of unique specifications or extensive experience required in a particular skill.
- It’s so easy to jump on the bandwagon when you consider all you have to do initially is to make a social media post about any particular list that may suit your goals.
- The post doesn’t need to be a hard sell or sound like a help-wanted ad either. Just make your point.
- For longer-term objectives, think about gathering a number of Best Of list results and use that in your recruiting materials and definitely post it on your website or blog.
Estero Named No. 1
There are many other lists you can pull from. Look at the favorable office space situation in Estero, which this week was named the No. 1 suburban office market in the East by corporate relocation consultant The Boyd Co. The company further found Estero as the suburban market with the lowest operating costs across the nation for a corporate headquarters. See the Boyd Company Top 50 Office list.
Now we know what Hertz was thinking when deciding where to relocate their corporate headquarters.
This news is not limed to Estero, by the way. Certain businesses in Bonita Springs and south Lee County as a whole can use this information as well. Think commercial real estate firms for instance.
Additionally, like Hertz, there is probably a lot of other companies checking into Best Of lists as they look to relocate or launch a new business.
Another popular list comes from Money magazine, which this year named Sarasota, where the agency has clients, as the best place to retire in the waterfront living category. Fort Myers has also placed on Best Of lists over the past two decades or so.
Of course being at the bottom of a Best Of can hurt. We’re wondering how places like New Orleans and Lafayette, Louisiana, are handling their cities as the Forbes Job Growth List say they are the only two locations out of 200 where Moody’s forecasts annual employment declines of .5 percent and .2 percent, respectively.
So go ahead and make the best of the lists!
